harlem renaissance

A turning point for Black Cultural History that celebrated the traditions, voice, and ways of life.

when did it take place?

1920's. Harlem, a neighborhood in northern Manhattan, had a large population of African Americans in the early 1920s. Which set the perfect stage for movements such as those for civil rights, black pride and many others with a focus on African American heritage. One of the movements is known as the Harlem renaissance which encompasses many other movements but particularly focuses on the arts; drama, art, and music.

where was it centered?

Harlem, New York. In the 1880 Harlem, a neighborhood in the northern part of Manhattan was predominantly populated by upper-class white families, however, many landlords began to build at a very fast rate leading to their desperation to keep them filled. Middle class black families began to fill the void and in the midst of predominantly racist America it resulted in the upset of the white residents who moved out shortly thereafter. These factors as well as others drew African Americans from all over the nation allowing for the appropriate name “The Great Migration”.

why is it significant?

It marked the first time that mainstream publishers and critics took African American literature seriously, and African American literature and arts attracted significant attention from the nation at large.
